Actor-politician and DMDK Founder Vijayakanth Passed Away
Renowned actor-turned-politician Vijayakanth, known for his dynamic roles in action films, sadly passed away in Chennai. He founded the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) in 2005, offering an alternative to the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).
Vijayakanth's health had been declining, and he was admitted to MIOT Hospital for pneumonia, eventually succumbing to complications from COVID-19. Popularly referred to as Captain, he last appeared during a DMDK meeting on December 18.
Having entered politics in 2005, Vijayakanth allied with the AIADMK for the 2011 elections, securing 29 out of 41 contested seats. However, disagreements over seat sharing led to the DMDK's departure from the AIADMK alliance before the 2021 assembly elections. Despite aligning with the Left and smaller parties, the DMDK did not secure any seats.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sadness over Vijayakanth's demise, praising his contributions to Tamil cinema and politics. Rahul Gandhi also extended condolences, acknowledging Vijayakanth's indelible impact on both realms.

Vijayakanth's wife, Premalatha, took charge of the DMDK on December 14, formalizing her leadership. The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin, paid his respects to his residence and announced that he would be laid to rest with State Honours.
Before his political journey, Vijayakanth had a prolific film career, featuring in 154 movies, including notable ones like “Captain Prabhakaran” and “Sethupathu IPS.” In politics, he served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly from 2011 to 2016.
In 2011, DMDK's electoral success positioned it as the principal opposition party, but subsequent differences led to severed ties with the AIADMK and the resignation of several DMDK MLAs. Vijayakanth's legacy encompasses both his impactful cinematic performances and his dedicated service to the people of Tamil Nadu.
