United Airlines Flight Engine Catches Fire: Chicago Takeoff
On Monday, May 27, a United Airlines flight at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport was forced to abort takeoff after one of its engines caught fire. The dramatic incident was captured on video, showing smoke billowing from one of the plane's wings.
The engine of United Flight 2091, which was scheduled to depart for Seattle at around 2 pm, burst into flames while the aircraft was on the taxiway. This led to the immediate evacuation of 148 passengers and five crew members, according to statements from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and United Airlines.
A viral video, filmed by passenger Ivan Paloalto from inside the plane, shows smoke streaming from one of the wings as the aircraft moved along the tarmac. “I felt the impact on my window,” Paloalto told Storyful. “As I looked, the engine was on fire and smoke was coming out.”
Following the incident, the FAA temporarily halted arrivals at the airport, but normal operations resumed by 2:45 pm.
United Airlines confirmed that no injuries were reported and that first responders quickly addressed the engine issue. Passengers were able to deplane normally. The airline also stated, “We are working to make alternative travel arrangements for customers,” as reported by Fox News Digital.
The incident occurred during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year, Memorial Day weekend. Additionally, passengers at JFK International Airport in Queens, New York, faced delays due to dangerous thunderstorms on Monday.
