Twitter Renamed X Corp Accused of Bullying Anti-Hate Campaigners

X Corp, formerly known as Twitter, is facing accusations of attempting to silence anti-hate campaigners through legal threats. The Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) claims that X Corp accused them of making baseless claims in their reports about the platform. This comes after Elon Musk acquired the platform and pledged to defend free speech. CCDH's Chief Executive, Imran Ahmed, calls Musk's actions a blatant attempt to stifle honest criticism.

Allegations of Inaction Against Hate Speech and Misinformation:

Since Musk took over Twitter, the platform has been criticized, including by former employees, for not adequately countering hate speech and misinformation. However, in a tweet last December, Musk stated that hate speech on the platform had decreased by a third.

Reinstatement of Kanye West and Swastika Controversy:

Recently, Twitter, now X Corp, reinstated Kanye West after an eight-month ban for offensive tweets, one of which seemingly depicted a symbol combining a swastika and the Star of David.

X Corp's Response to CCDH's Allegations:

In response to CCDH's claims that Twitter fails to act on 99% of hateful messages from Twitter Blue subscribers, X Corp's lawyer, Alex Spiro, rejected the allegations, calling the CCDH's article inflammatory and misleading. Spiro also alleged that CCDH was financially supported by X Corp's commercial competitors and government entities, suggesting ulterior motives.

CCDH Denies Funding Claims:

CCDH refuted the funding allegations, stating that it does not accept money from social media companies or government bodies, allowing them to offer unbiased criticism and praise.

Support from British Politicians:

CCDH's work in highlighting hate speech on social media received support from British politicians. Damian Collins, a British MP on CCDH's UK board, criticized Musk's commitment to free speech when facing criticism. Shadow Culture Secretary Lucy Powell MP commended CCDH for tackling hate and misinformation on online platforms.

The Rebranding of Twitter to X Corp:

After the rebranding, X Corp replaced the old Twitter sign at its San Francisco headquarters with a new flashing X. However, complaints led to an order to remove the new sign.

The accusations of bullying and attempts to stifle criticism against X Corp have raised concerns about the platform's commitment to countering hate speech and misinformation. While CCDH remains steadfast in its mission, the dispute between X Corp and anti-hate campaigners continues to draw attention and debate about free speech and online content moderation.
