Trump Criticizes India's Tariffs, Threatens Reciprocal Taxes

In a recent interview with Larry Kudlow of Fox Business News, former US President Donald Trump voiced his strong criticism of India's high tax rates, particularly on certain American products like Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Trump warned that if he were to be elected for a second term in the 2024 presidential elections, he would consider imposing reciprocal taxes on Indian goods.

During his initial tenure as President, Trump labeled India a “tariff king.” In May 2019, he revoked India's preferential market access, known as the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP), citing inadequate market access for American exports.

Speaking about India's tariff rates, Trump expressed his frustration, saying, “India is very big with tariffs. I mean, I saw it with Harley-Davidson. I was saying, How do you do in a place like India? Oh, no good, sir. Why? They have 100 percent, 150 percent, and 200 percent tariffs.”

Trump highlighted the inconsistency in trade between the two countries, noting that while Indian-made motorbikes can enter the US market without facing any tariffs, American-made Harley-Davidson bikes are subjected to high tariffs in India, hampering their sales. Trump pointed out his efforts to address this issue during his presidency, asking why India's high tariffs were allowed to continue.

He revealed, “They said, well, that's not good. That's not our deal, OK? That's not our deal. And I came down very hard on them. But India is very big. Brazil is very big on tariffs, I mean, very, very big.”

Trump emphasized his desire for reciprocity in trade relations. “If India is charging us too, so what I want to have is a — call it retribution. You could call it whatever you want. If they are charging us, we charge them,” he asserted.

While Trump's remarks about India's trade policies and potential reciprocal taxes remain a point of contention, it's worth noting that he is currently a leading contender in the Republican presidential primaries, according to various national polls. His stance on trade and taxation continues to be a prominent aspect of his political platform.

Donald Trumps recent interview underscores his concerns about India's high tariffs on American goods, particularly Harley-Davidson motorcycles. He warns of the possibility of imposing reciprocal taxes on Indian products if he secures a second term in the 2024 presidential elections. Trump's views on trade remain a significant element of his political agenda as he participates in the ongoing Republican primaries.
