The tallest Ambedkar Statue is to be unveiled in the US on Oct 14
The United States is all set to welcome the tallest statue of Dr. B R Ambedkar, the principal architect of India's Constitution, outside the borders of India. This monumental creation, known as the ‘Statue of Equality,' will be unveiled in Maryland on October 14, a historic occasion eagerly anticipated by the organizers.
Standing at an impressive height of 19 feet, this awe-inspiring statue is a pivotal component of the Ambedkar International Centre (AIC), currently under construction on a sprawling 13-acre expanse. The AIC proudly proclaims, “This is the largest statue of Babasaheb outside India and has been installed as a part of the Ambedkar Memorial being constructed at this center.”
Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar, affectionately referred to as Babasaheb by his followers, was born on April 14, 1891. He held the esteemed position of chairman of the Constituent Assembly's Drafting Committee, earning him the well-deserved moniker of the Architect of the Indian Constitution. In the post-Independence era, he also served as the Minister of Law and Justice in Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's inaugural Cabinet. Ambedkar's enduring legacy is intricately tied to his instrumental role in spearheading social movements advocating for the rights of Dalits and untouchables.
Ambedkar passed away on December 6, 1956, only months after he embraced Buddhism on October 14 of the same year, a date that serendipitously coincides with the unveiling of this remarkable statue in Maryland. October 14 is celebrated as Dhamma Chakra Parivartan Din by Ambedkarites, marking a significant moment in their history.
The artistic genius behind this magnificent creation is none other than the renowned sculptor Ram Sutar. Sutar, whose previous masterpiece includes the iconic Statue of Unity dedicated to Sardar Patel, crafted this extraordinary tribute to Babasaheb. The Statue of Unity stands proudly on an island in the Narmada River, downstream from the Sardar Sarovar Dam in Gujarat.
The Ambedkar International Centre (AIC) envisions this memorial as a platform to disseminate Babasaheb's profound messages and teachings while serving as a symbol of equality and human rights.
