Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2023 Celebrates Pioneers in Quantum Dots
The Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 2023 has been bestowed upon three remarkable scientists: Moungi G Bawendi, Louis E Brus, and Alexei I Ekimov. Their groundbreaking work in the realm of quantum dots has earned them this prestigious accolade. Quantum dots, minuscule nanoparticles whose properties are dictated by their size, have found pivotal applications in the field of nanotechnology.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, in announcing the laureates, hailed their achievement in manipulating particles to such a diminutive scale that quantum phenomena come into play. These minuscule wonders, known as quantum dots, have become integral to the world of nanotechnology.
This award marks the third Nobel Prize presentation of the week. Earlier, the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Pierre Agostini from France, along with Hungarian-Austrian Ferenc Krausz and Franco-Swede Anne L'Huillier. Preceding that, the Nobel Medicine Prize was granted to Hungarian scientist Katalin Kariko and her American counterpart Drew Weissman.
The world eagerly awaits the unveiling of Nobel laureates in Literature, Peace, and Economics on October 5, 6, and 9, respectively.
In an intriguing twist, Swedish media reported that the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences might have inadvertently leaked the Nobel Prize in Chemistry winners prematurely. According to public broadcaster SVT, an erroneous press release containing the laureates' names was sent out early on a Wednesday.
In the preceding year, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to Carolyn R Bertozzi, Morten Meldal, and K Barry Sharpless for their contributions to the development of click and bioorthogonal chemistry.
Johan Åqvist, Chair of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry, emphasized the significance of simplicity in this year's Chemistry Prize, emphasizing that functional molecules can be constructed through straightforward means without the need for unnecessary complexity.
