Microsoft has recently announced a significant change after 15 years by introducing a new default font for its Office suite. The font, named Aptos, is a modern successor to Calibri and has been developed to meet the requirements of higher-resolution screens, focusing on sharpness and uniformity.
Calibri has served as Microsoft's default font for a long time, but the company believes that it's time for a change due to the evolving technology we use daily. Microsoft stated, “Today we begin the final phase of this major change where Aptos will start appearing as the new default font across Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel for hundreds of millions of users.” The transition to Aptos as the default font will occur gradually over the next few months.

Microsoft introduced five new fonts in April 2021: Bierstadt, Grandview, Seaford, Skeena, and Tenorite. These fonts were added to the font picker in Microsoft 365. To determine the next default font, Microsoft sought input from users. Among the options, Bierstadt resonated the most and was subsequently renamed Aptos.
Aptos is a sans-serif font that draws inspiration from mid-20th-century Swiss typography. Sans-serif fonts, also known as Grotesque or Gothic, feature simple letterforms with even strokes, ensuring readability. Microsoft describes Aptos as bold, well-defined, directive, and constrained. The font embodies professionalism, adaptability, subtle flourishes of expression, and enhanced clarity, making it suitable for various professional contexts.
While Aptos becomes the default font, users still have the freedom to choose from the other available fonts and can select their preferred default font through the settings.
The introduction of Aptos is part of a broader wave of updates coming to Microsoft 365, aiming to make the software more expressive and inclusive. Microsoft is also implementing a newly designed font picker experience, along with new themes, colors, and backgrounds.
