Meitei Couple Ignored Safety Advice Before Their Tragic Murder: Police Reports

Meitei Couple's Tragic Tale in Manipur

Meitei Couple's Tragic Tale in Manipur

In a heartbreaking turn of events, a Meitei couple met a tragic end on July 6 after they chose to elope, ignoring the advice to return to a safer area amidst the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur. This unfortunate incident sheds light on the grim realities faced by those caught in the midst of turmoil and unrest.

Hemanjit Singh and a 17-year-old girl, with whom he was in a relationship, embarked on their fateful journey on that fateful day. They eloped, setting off a chain of events that would lead to their untimely demise. The girl's father, deeply concerned for his daughter, filed a complaint of abduction against Singh, alleging that his daughter had been forced into this relationship against her wishes.

Their journey began innocently enough, with Singh picking up the girl from her tuition center in Imphal. As they set off on a motorbike, they stopped at a stone quarry to capture some selfies, completely unaware of the dangers that lay ahead.

Tragically, a group of Kuki village volunteers in Joupi village tried to intervene, advising the young couple to return to their own area for their safety. Sadly, their advice went unheeded.

The couple's last known cellphone location was traced to Lamdan in the Churachandpur district. Here, a chilling discovery was made – a new SIM card had been activated in Singh's mobile phone on July 7, just a day after they went missing. Lamdan, a Kuki-dominated area, had become the epicenter of this grim story.

Months later, as the civil war-like situation continued to ravage Manipur, photographs emerged on social media that painted a haunting picture of the couple's final moments. One photo showed them sitting on the ground in what seemed to be a forest, accompanied by two armed men in the background.

Another, even more disturbing, showed them lying lifeless on the ground. Tragically, the man's head was missing in the photograph, and the girl's face remained concealed.

The authenticity of these photographs could not be independently verified, leaving room for uncertainty in an already heart-wrenching tale.

In the wake of this tragedy, protests erupted in Imphal as school students voiced their outrage against the killing and abduction. The police responded with tear gas shells, leading to injuries for at least 25 students. In a bid to maintain order and safety, the state government made the difficult decision to close all schools until September 29.

This heartbreaking story serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of ignoring advice in times of turmoil. It is a painful testament to the turmoil and violence that have gripped Manipur, highlighting the urgent need for peace and stability in the region.

In the pursuit of justice for the Meitei couple, calls for a thorough and resourceful investigation by agencies such as the CBI have grown louder, as they alone may possess the capability to bring the perpetrators to justice.
