Indonesia Hunts for Foreigner Who Meditated Nude at Hindu Temple
Officials on the Indonesian paradise island of Bali are currently on the lookout for a foreign individual who was caught on camera meditating in the nude at a Hindu shrine in a video that went viral.
Bali, known for its picturesque landscapes, has taken a tough stance against unruly tourists in the wake of a series of incidents that have shown disrespect to the island's culture and heritage. The authorities have pledged to clamp down on such behavior.
The search for the unidentified foreigner is being conducted in collaboration with the Bali police, although the precise location and time of the incident are still under investigation.
The incident gained significant attention on the predominantly Hindu island after a Balinese influencer, Ni Luh Djelantik, shared the video multiple times over the weekend, garnering hundreds of thousands of views.
Immigration Office head, Tedy Riyandi, stated, “We are still in the process of investigating this incident.” However, the identity and nationality of the foreign national have not been disclosed publicly during the ongoing search.
Riyandi added, “The Immigration Office's current efforts include attempting to contact the foreigner through their social media accounts, but we have not received a response to date.”
Bali, heavily reliant on tourism, attracts millions of foreign visitors every year. Nonetheless, since the island's reopening after the COVID-19 pandemic, several high-profile cases have resulted in the deportation of individuals involved in indecent acts.
In June, Bali immigration deported a Danish woman who was captured on video flashing the public while riding a motorbike. Similarly, in April, a Russian woman was expelled from the island for posting a nude photo of herself in front of a sacred tree.
In response to these incidents, the local government published a guide for tourists interested in visiting Bali, following pressure from the island's immigration office, to ensure that visitors respect and adhere to the island's predominantly Hindu culture.
