Centre Cuts LPG prices by ₹200 for all consumer polls approach

In a move aimed at curbing inflation before crucial state and general elections, the central government has announced a reduction of ₹200 per cylinder in the prices of cooking gas for all domestic consumers. As part of this decision, the Union cabinet has also given the green light for an extra ₹200 subsidy under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), effectively increasing the total subsidy amount for beneficiaries of the Ujjwala scheme to ₹400.

Currently, a 14.2-kg LPG cylinder is priced at ₹1,103 in New Delhi. However, starting from tomorrow, this cost will be lowered to ₹903. Similarly, considering the consistent ₹200 per cylinder subsidy, Ujjwala beneficiaries will only need to pay ₹703.

Union Minister Anurag Thakur stated, “PM Modi has chosen to decrease the price of domestic LPG cylinders by ₹200 for all users. This serves as a special gift from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, especially for the women of our nation, coinciding with the occasions of Raksha Bandhan and Onam.”

Reflecting on the progress made since 2014, Thakur noted, “When we took office in 2014, the count of domestic LPG connections was merely 14.5 crore. Today, that figure has surged to 33 crore, with a substantial 9.6 crore connections being distributed under the Ujjwala scheme.”

Reacting to this announcement, BJP president JP Nadda expressed his gratitude, saying, “Heartfelt thanks for the Cabinet's decision under the leadership of respected Prime Minister @narendramodi, to significantly reduce the cooking gas prices.”

Nadda further added, “Now, Ujjwala beneficiaries will have access to LPG at just ₹700, while all other consumers can avail it at ₹900. Modi ji's thoughtful gesture for our women, especially on the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan. This move will positively impact 33 crore consumers throughout the nation.”

Free Gas Connections for 75 Lakh Women

During the cabinet briefing, Minister Thakur also shared that in celebration of Raksha Bandhan and Onam, the government has made the decision to offer free gas connections to 75 lakh women through the Ujjwala scheme. As part of this initiative, these women will receive a gas burner, their first cooking gas cylinder, and a pipe, all free of charge. Upon providing gas connections to these 75 lakh women, the overall count of Ujjwala scheme beneficiaries will rise to a substantial 10.35 crore.
