At SCO Summit PM Modi says that a few countries are safe as heaven for terrorists

Modi in SCO Summit

During the SCO Summit, held virtually, Prime Minister Narendra Modi voiced his concerns about the issue of cross-border terrorism. Without explicitly mentioning any country, he emphasized that some nations employ cross-border terrorism as a tool and provide safe havens for terrorists. PM Modi urged the member countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to condemn such practices unequivocally. He underscored the significance of combatting terrorism and called for consistency in addressing this global threat. Notably, Pakistan's Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif was also in attendance at the virtual SCO Summit.

Furthermore, PM Modi presented his perspective on the SCO, stating that it should be viewed as an extended family rather than merely an extended neighborhood. He outlined the pillars of India's vision for the SCO, which encompass security, economic development, connectivity, unity, respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as environmental protection.

The summit also addressed the expansion of the SCO's influence, with discussions centered on the potential inclusion of Iran and the initiation of the membership process for Belarus. Prominent leaders such as China's President Xi Jinping and Russia's Vladimir Putin actively participated in the virtual summit, marking President Putin's first international appearance since the brief mutiny by the Wagner mercenary group in late June.

Regarding the situation in Afghanistan, PM Modi highlighted its direct impact on the security of all member countries. He stressed that India shares the concerns and expectations of most SCO member countries with regard to Afghanistan. PM Modi called for collective efforts aimed at promoting the welfare of the Afghan people. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of preventing the utilization of Afghan territory for the propagation of unrest in neighboring nations or the promotion of extremist ideologies.

Established in 2001 by China and Russia, with the subsequent inclusion of former Soviet central Asian states, India, and Pakistan, the SCO is an eight-member political and security group aimed at countering Western influence in Eurasia.
