Bumrah's ICC Code Breach: Setback in India's Test vs. England

Jasprit Bumrah has been officially reprimanded for a breach of conduct during the recent Hyderabad Test against England, where India faced a disappointing 28-run defeat at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. This reprimand follows an incident on the fourth day of the opening Test match of the five-game series.

During the 81st over of England's second inning, Bumrah intentionally obstructed Ollie Pope while the batter was attempting a single, resulting in inappropriate physical contact.

Despite his notable performance of taking six wickets in the Hyderabad Test, Bumrah was found to have violated Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which deals with “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee, or any other person.”

It is noteworthy that Bumrah was not fined by the ICC since this marked his first offense in the last 24 months. Nevertheless, one demerit point has been added to his record. The charge against him was brought forth by on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney, along with third umpire Marais Erasmus and fourth umpire Rohan Pandit.

In adherence to the ICC guidelines, the minimum penalty for a Level 1 breach is an official reprimand, while the maximum includes a fine of up to 50% of the player's match fee and the addition of one or two demerit points.

Bumrah's case did not necessitate a formal hearing, as the 30-year-old admitted guilt and accepted the imposed sanction from Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees.

Looking ahead, the second Test of the series is scheduled to commence on February 2 at the Dr. Y.S. Rajashekar Reddy ACA-VDCA International Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam. India, having suffered their first-ever Test match loss in Hyderabad, aims to make a strong comeback.

This defeat marked a historic occurrence, as it was the first time in the 91-year Test history in India that they lost a match after taking a first-inning lead of more than 100 runs.
