Japan Earthquake Crisis: 155 Quakes, Extensive Damage, and Prime Minister's Concerns

Japan was rocked by a barrage of 155 earthquakes in a single day, leaving devastation in their wake. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida expresses deep concern over “extensive damage with numerous casualties.”

The seismic activity, including a powerful 7.6-magnitude quake, has triggered tsunami waves exceeding a meter in height. The aftermath is evident in heartbreaking scenes of toppled buildings, sunken boats at ports, and countless homes reduced to ashes. Local residents endure power outages amid freezing overnight temperatures.

Tragically, at least six lives have been lost, with reports of bodies discovered amidst the wreckage of collapsed structures. The Japan Meteorological Agency, diligent in its efforts, declares that all tsunami warnings and advisories issued on Monday have been lifted. However, caution remains as minor fluctuations in tidal levels persist.

Prime Minister Kishida underscores the urgent need for rescue operations, emphasizing the extensive damage incurred. He notes a “race against time” to save victims and pledges to establish sea routes to reach isolated areas in the northern Noto peninsula. Approximately 100 members of the self-defense forces are actively engaged in search and rescue missions.

The gravity of the situation is further underscored by over 32,000 households are still without power, with major highways and Tokyo's bullet train services disrupted. The region grapples with the aftermath, prompting the United States to offer assistance.

President Joe Biden expresses solidarity, stating, “As close allies, the United States and Japan share a deep bond of friendship that unites our people. We are praying for the people of Japan during this trying time.

Looking ahead, the Japan Meteorological Agency issues a warning of potential additional quakes in the upcoming week, particularly within the next two to three days. The nation remains on alert as it confronts the aftermath of this seismic onslaught.
