S. Jaishankar supports 8 Indians facing Qatar death verdict

Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar met with the family members of eight Indian Navy veterans who have been handed a death sentence in Qatar. He assured the families that the government is giving the highest priority to their case and will spare no effort to secure their release. S. Jaishankar expressed his deep concern for the families' distress and emphasized the government's commitment to doing everything within its power to bring the sailors back home. He also pledged close coordination with the families in their pursuit of justice.

The distressing incident occurred on October 26 when a court in Qatar pronounced the death penalty for these eight Indian individuals, all of whom had previously served in the Indian Navy. The charges against them, which remained undisclosed, are suspected to be related to espionage. These sailors were apprehended in August 2022 while working for a private company called Dahra Global in Qatar.

The Ministry of External Affairs reacted with shock and dismay upon learning of the death penalty verdict. They promptly issued a statement expressing their astonishment and declared their intention to challenge the decision in the Qatari court. The ministry also reassured the affected families that they were actively involved in the case and were examining all available legal options.

“We attach immense importance to this case and have been closely monitoring it from the outset. We will continue to provide full consular and legal support to the detainees. Additionally, we are committed to engaging with the Qatari authorities to address this matter,” the statement added.

The Indian government's dedication to securing the release of these Navy veterans remains steadfast, and they are resolutely focused on resolving this challenging situation in collaboration with the affected families.
