Tony Fernandes, the CEO of AirAsia, recently took to LinkedIn to commend the airline's work culture and progress. However, the positivity of his message was overshadowed by a photo of him leading a management meeting without a shirt, leading to significant criticism from the public.
In his LinkedIn post shared on October 16, Fernandes stated, “It was a stressful week, and Veranita Yosephine suggested a massage. Got to love Indonesia and the AirAsia culture that allows me to have a massage and conduct a management meeting. We are making substantial progress, and I have now finalized the Capital A structure. Exciting days lie ahead. I'm proud of what we have built and have never lost sight of the finish line.”
The post garnered more than 500 likes and numerous comments. Many of these comments expressed the view that conducting a management meeting shirtless and receiving a massage in the office was inappropriate.
One individual remarked, “A grown man, who is the chief executive of a publicly listed company, conducts a management meeting with his shirt off as he gets a massage. Remove ‘who is the chief executive of a publicly listed company,' and it is still inappropriate.”
Another commenter added, “I'm going to assume that this meeting took place long after the workday was over and most of the office was empty (except a few C-level), but at least put on a shirt for the photo.”
One person noted, “This may not be the best way to showcase work culture. I don't think you are conveying the intended impression you had hoped for.”
A fourth comment raised an interesting perspective, “I am curious how this would be received if a woman or a woman-identifying person posted a picture of themselves in the same position. What are we conveying here? Is there no time for self-care? Phrases like ‘hustle culture' and ‘grinding' are no longer part of the younger generation's vocabulary.

I usually refrain from commenting. But this is beyond stressful indeed.”
