Prada To Design Lunar Spacesuits For NASA's Moon Mission

Italian luxury fashion house Prada has entered a groundbreaking partnership with the commercial space company Axiom Space to design cutting-edge lunar spacesuits for NASA's Artemis III mission. This mission is a significant milestone as it marks the first crewed moon landing since 1972 and will also include the historic moment of placing a woman on the lunar surface.

These spacesuits, known as Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU), are an evolution of NASA's Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU) design. Prada's involvement in this project aims to provide astronauts with advanced capabilities for space exploration, achieved through innovative technologies and design enhancements. These spacesuits will offer improved flexibility and enhanced protection against the challenging lunar environment.

Prada is collaborating with Axiom Space's systems team to create these lunar spacesuits, which will not only be used for Artemis III but also contribute to NASA's goal of developing commercially developed systems for lunar living and scientific exploration.

Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada Group marketing director, expressed the brand's commitment to pushing the boundaries of human exploration, saying, “The constantly forward-thinking ethos of Prada for humanity has broadened to his desire for adventure and to brave new horizons: space. We are honored to be a part of this historic mission with Axiom Space. Our decades of experimentation, cutting-edge technology, and design know-how will now be applied to the design of a spacesuit for the Artemis era.”

This collaboration signifies the first-ever partnership between an Italian luxury fashion house and a commercial space company, highlighting the fusion of fashion and space technology.

Michael Suffredini, CEO of Axiom Space, shared his enthusiasm for this venture, emphasizing Prada's technical expertise in raw materials, manufacturing techniques, and innovative design concepts.

These elements are essential not only for ensuring the comfort of astronauts on the lunar surface but also for addressing the critical human factors that were lacking in earlier spacesuit designs.

It's important to note that NASA is engaging with various companies to advance its space missions. For instance, Elon Musk's SpaceX has secured a NASA contract to design a moon lander, and Goodyear is developing airless tires for future lunar vehicles. Additionally, NASA has collaborated with Bjarke Ingels' studio BIG and construction technology firm ICON to create the Mars Dune Alpha, a 3D-printed structure designed to simulate living conditions on Mars.

In summary, the collaboration between Prada and Axiom Space represents a significant step in fashion and space exploration history, as it combines high-end fashion design with cutting-edge space technology to support NASA's Artemis III mission and pave the way for future lunar exploration.
