Disney+ Hotstar to Crack Down on Password Sharing

Disney+ Hotstar has recently updated its policies in Canada to address password sharing. Similar to Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar is taking measures to discourage password sharing among its users. The company has informed its Canadian subscribers about these changes, and they will come into effect on November 1.

The company's email to subscribers stated that it will be enforcing stricter rules against the practice of sharing accounts. Specifically, the email mentioned, “We're implementing restrictions on your ability to share your account or login credentials outside of your household.”

Disney+ Hotstar has also updated its help center to make it clear that subscriptions should not be shared outside of one's household.

In the updated Canadian subscriber agreement, a new section called “Account Sharing” outlines that the company will monitor subscribed user accounts. If any violations of the policy are detected, the account may either be limited or terminated entirely.

The agreement states, “Unless otherwise permitted by your Service Tier, you may not share your subscription outside of your household…If we determine that you have violated this Agreement, we may limit or terminate access to the Service and/or take any other steps as permitted by this Agreement.”

These policy changes will come into effect in Canada on November 1, 2023, for subscribers on their next billing date following this date.

It's worth noting that Disney+ Hotstar is expected to implement a similar policy in other countries, including India.

These actions by Disney+ Hotstar mirror the steps taken by Netflix earlier this year to crack down on password sharing. Netflix also sent emails to users in select countries to inform them of these policy changes. Netflix clarified that an account is intended for use by one household, and it introduced features like Transfer Profile and Manage Access and Devices to facilitate this policy.

In summary, Disney+ Hotstar is taking measures to curb password sharing, which will be enforced through monitoring user accounts, and violations may result in limited or terminated access to the service.

This policy is set to take effect in Canada on November 1, with the possibility of similar measures being introduced in other countries, such as India. These efforts align with Disney's plans to introduce new ad-supported membership, following a similar path to Netflix's actions to address password sharing.
