Kai Bird: In 1954 Nehru Offered Oppenheimer Indian Citizenship
According to American author Kai Bird, who co-authored the book “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J Robert Oppenheimer,” Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru of India offered Julius Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, Indian citizenship in 1954. This offer came after Oppenheimer faced humiliation over statements he made against nuclear weapons.
However, Oppenheimer, being a deeply patriotic American, did not seriously consider the offer. He had a distinguished career in the United States, but in 1954, he faced a difficult period when he was subjected to a security hearing and stripped of his security clearance.
This situation arose as a result of the McCarthy witch-hunts, a term coined to describe Senator Joseph R. McCarthy's practices of accusing government employees of disloyalty and using dubious methods to prosecute them during the era of countering communism in the US.
Oppenheimer, who had Jewish ancestry but was not a practicing Jew, had a strong concern for the rise of Fascism. He feared that German physicists might provide Hitler with an atomic bomb, which could lead to a victory for fascism worldwide. As a result, he believed that the development of the atomic bomb was necessary, considering the context of World War II.
While Oppenheimer was involved in the development of the atomic bomb, he also had mixed emotions about the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. He acknowledged the devastation caused and felt empathy for the victims.
After the bombings, he gave a speech in October 1954, denouncing nuclear weapons as weapons for aggressors, not defensive tools. He spent the rest of his life advocating for an international arms control regime.
Oppenheimer's life and story continue to hold relevance, particularly as the world still grapples with the existence and potential consequences of nuclear weapons. The book highlights his views on science, technology, and the responsibility of scientists in society.
